R & D

Bilfinger Water Technologies carries out research in parallel with development:

  • Basic research on fluid dynamics of the pressure filtration process of solid-liquid systems, in collaboration with ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA: DICMA (Department of Chemical, Mining and Environmental Engineering) and with DICIM (Department of Industrial and Materials Chemistry)

  • Applied research within the company in order to develop new technological solutions on Diemme® Filtration filters press.

Moreover, Bilfinger Water Technologies attends conventions and congresses bringing knowledge and presenting papers, and it is also partner in various research projects.

And finally, Bilfinger Water Technologies offers opportunities for research to Industrial Chemistry and Engineering students both deepening the knowledge of challenging subjects and training a new class of professional in the filtration field.

BASIC RESEARCH

This activity examines the different stages of the filtration process (sludge feeding, cake washing, cake drying) so as to fully understand the basic fluid dynamic principles and develop technologies to gain better control and efficiency.

Collaboration with DICAM allows us to develop this activity at different levels and with different theoretical and experimental approaches:

  • development of theoretical mathematical models which include an input of experimental data.
  • development of mathematical models of numerical simulation of the fluid dynamics of real systems.
  • experimental studies on fluid dynamics through particle image velocimetry and tomography of biphasic systems.

APPLIED RESEARCH

Bilfinger Water Technologies boasts a complete industrial pilot plant used exclusively for applied research purposes on strategic real systems. This plant is able to process several tons of any product in continuous operation and it is fundamental for studying the medium and long-term behavior of the filter press and all its parts in every phase of the operation. This activity allows us to optimize the filtering process for any kind of material and collect immediate and real data so as to improve plant design. Ultimately, this activity allows us to develop new technological solutions for plants and processes.
