The Future of Sludge: How Diemme Filtration is Turning Industrial Waste into Biodegradable Plastic

b-plas

For nearly every industrial operator, from municipal wastewater plants to chemical manufacturers, sludge is the ultimate liability. It is a costly, complex, and continuous waste stream. The primary goal of any solid-liquid separation process, including our own world-class filter presses, is typically to reduce its volume and disposal cost.

But what if we are looking at the problem in a narrow way?

What if that sludge, a costly waste, could be transformed into a high-value byproduct, into an in-demand asset? What if the same waste that pollutes our environment could be used to create a material that safeguards it?

This is not a theoretical exercise. At Diemme Filtration, we believe true innovation means looking beyond optimizing current processes and investing in technologies that redefine the entire value chain. This vision is why we have taken a majority shareholding in B-Plas, an innovative scale-up poised to make industrial circular economy real.

B-Plas is not just a project we support; it is a long-term commitment and a core part of our sustainability strategy. This innovative company is developing technologies to transform waste sludge into organic and biodegradable plastics. This initiative moves beyond simple waste management and represents a new frontier in the circular economy, offering a tangible solution to reduce sludge from water treatment plants and upgrade resources in a revolutionary new way.

This is Diemme Filtration’s vision in action: investing in innovation as the key to long-term success, driven not only by financial returns but by our contribution to global sustainability.

From University Lab to Industrial Accelerator

The B-Plas story is a powerful example of Diemme Filtration’s role as a true business accelerator.

The technology began as a promising research project at the renowned University of Bologna. In 2018, its potential was recognized with funding from the Climate KIC program. Diemme Filtration saw the transformative power of this idea and stepped in not just as an investor, but as a foundational partner. Together with BEHOLD srl (an entity of the University of Bologna) and the original researchers, we founded the B-Plas startup and became its majority shareholder.

This isn’t a passive investment; it is a close operational and strategic integration carried out through a corporate venture building model.

We believe that innovation flourishes through collaboration. To that end, Diemme Filtration and B-Plas have established a deep partnership that includes the sharing of R&D infrastructure. This integration creates a powerful synergy, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and expertise between our established engineering teams and the agile B-Plas researchers. This ensures resources are shared effectively and fosters a culture of continuous innovation in the field of sustainability.

Our decades of expertise in handling and dewatering sludge provide the industrial-scale process knowledge, while B-Plas provides the groundbreaking biochemical pathways. It is the perfect fusion of industrial might and scientific discovery.

The B-Plas Mission: Solving Two Problems at Once

The B-Plas business strategy is a landmark example of circular-economy thinking. The core of its sustainability manifesto is to solve two of the modern world’s most pressing environmental challenges simultaneously:

  1. The Sludge Problem: B-Plas technology is designed to address the growing challenge of sustainable disposal and reuse of sludge from  municipal and industrial sewage treatment, as well as agricultural and food waste. It provides an alternative to landfilling or incineration by upcycling this waste into a valuable commodity.
  2. The Plastic Problem: The process directly mitigates the rising contamination of our water and soil by non-biodegradable, petroleum-based plastics. By using a waste stream as a feedstock, B-Plas produces bioplastics via biochemical processes, creating a new material with a much lower environmental impact.

This dual-purpose mission has earned B-Plas significant recognition. The project was selected for funding from the LIFE Program (LIFE21-ENV-IT-CROSS-LIFE), a European Union initiative focused specifically on circular economy and environmental sustainability projects. This funding is a powerful testament to the innovative nature of the B-Plas technology and its potential for a massive positive impact in waste management and eco-friendly material production. This financial support reinforces our joint commitment to driving change toward more responsible and environmentally friendly industrial practices.

A “Benefit Company”: Profit with a Purpose

Further aligning with Diemme Filtration’s core values, B-Plas has been designated a Benefit Company.

This legal status is a formal recognition that the company’s mission extends beyond economic profits to include a binding commitment to social and environmental goals. This isn’t just a marketing statement; it’s a legal framework that aligns with the B-Plas mission of promoting sustainable, long-term solutions for waste management and bioplastic production.

This commitment to a “triple bottom line” – People, Planet, and Profit – is a perfect reflection of Diemme Filtration’s own sustainability strategy, which is organized around the five pillars of People, Company, Planet, Community, and Innovation.

The table below outlines how this partnership directly activates key pillars of our strategic sustainability plan for 2024-2027.

Diemme Filtration Strategic Pillar B-Plas Partnership Activation & Goals
Planet Directly promotes circularity, recycling, and resource reuse. Creates a new technology to optimize resource use (sludge) and reduce environmental impacts (plastic pollution).
Innovation Moves towards process and product innovation (bioplastics from sludge). Integrates advanced biochemical technologies and builds virtuous synergies with stakeholders (University of Bologna).
Community Fosters partnerships with universities (Università di Bologna, Politecnico di Milano, Università di Verona…) and supports local innovation, reinforcing our commitment to the region’s technological and economic growth.

Redefining the Future of Filtration

For Diemme Filtration our role in the industry is not just to sell equipment. Our mission is to innovate filtration technologies for global industries, leveraging our expertise to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and promote environmental sustainability.

The B-Plas partnership is perhaps the boldest expression of this mission.

It demonstrates a long-term vision that goes far beyond the next order or the next machine. We are actively investing in the technology that will change the very nature of the materials our clients are processing. We are helping to create a world where a wastewater plant manager is no longer just “disposing” of sludge but “producing” a valuable feedstock for a new, sustainable industry.

This is what it means to be a true thought leader. It’s not just about publishing articles; it’s about making concrete investments in the future you claim to believe in. We are committed to a circular and sustainable economy that considers not only profits but also our responsibility to the environment and future generations.
